Reading by novelist Tim O'Brien

The Cannonball Press: Selected Prints

The Seizing Party

This living history interactive event will be a dramatization of the Columbus Women's Riot of April 11, 1863. As reported by Columbus papers, sparked by high prices and scarcity of goods a group of women numbering about 65 marched down Broad Street to "raid the stores of speculators". Armed with knives and pistols (which they themselves were making as war-time factory workers), the rioters shouted curses as they went and struck Norris's dry goods store and "commenced helping themselves". Police arrived before the women could reach other stores and dispersed them, arresting a man named Shanghai Brooks (described by the press as a vagabond) for encouraging the women. The program will be done in collaboration with Uptown Columbus and the CSU Theatre Department as a prelude to the National Civil War Naval Museum's afternoon program "Bitterly Divided."

Winslow Homer is one of the most celebrated American artists of the nineteenth century. All of Homer's most popular illustrations are included in this exhibition of 125 wood engravings produced over a period of nearly three decades. Principal themes relate to family and community life before the American Civil War of 1861-1865 and later, a more somber approach following the War years


Write Uptown
